Giovanni Primo Greco
Giovanni Primo Greco was born in Sicily, Italy. His journey through the realms of painting spans from the classical figuration of the Old Masters to the expressive freedom of abstract art. After completing his artistic studies at the School of the Naked in Catania and the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, he embarked on his painting career in the early 1990s. His early experiences included working as an assistant at various galleries and cultural associations, which deepened his passion for art history. He delved into the techniques of the 16th and 17th centuries, meticulously studying the works of Caravaggio, Poussin, and especially the Flemish masters such as Van Eyck, Brueghel, and Bosch.
Driven by a strong passion for these periods, the artist spent years investigating their methods and approaches to painting. This grounding in figurative and classical art provided a solid foundation for his later evolution. In recent years, he has moved towards abstract and informal art. His current research explores the nature of humanity and the world through a process of synthesizing reality into its most immediate form, where gesture and dream become the emotional content that evokes passions, tensions, and challenges. Influenced by the informal artists of his hometown, he applies a form of psychoanalysis to color and form in his work, eliminating the third dimension and accentuating emotional values through the expressive power of line. He is drawn to the textural relationships observed in everyday surfaces, such as the walls of the city, the large tears in street posters, or their fluttering edges. His work is a dialogue between human and natural forces, an empathetic interplay between pure form and its inherent complexity. He believes that art should be a direct and unfiltered expression of emotions – free, spontaneous, and powerful.
