Surface - Current Selected (Selection is ongoing. New artists are being added.)
Nxera Art Gallery is proud to introduce Jim Black for our exclusive Surface 2 Exhibition.
Jim Black is an American abstract painter based in Richmond, Virginia. A native of North Carolina, Black has been an active and vital contributor to the Richmond art community for more than two decades. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003.
Deeply rooted in modernist traditions, Black’s artwork centers around an ongoing exploration of tension, texture, and ambiguity. His distinct creative process involves building up heavily applied, loose layers of paint and mixed media, which he then selectively scrapes away and deconstructs. What remains on the canvas is a powerful combination of geometric forms, gestural mark-making, and structural lines that achieve a unique "ragged eloquence".
While highly emotional and process-driven, his paintings ultimately command a quiet, meditative presence. Black’s works have been showcased in galleries across Virginia, New York, and Europe—including representation at international art fairs—and are held in numerous private and corporate collections nationwide.
We invite you to experience Jim Black's deeply moving and visually striking artworks at the Surface 2 Exhibition.
