Surface - Current Selected (Selection is ongoing. New artists are being added.)
Magnus Østermann is a contemporary Norwegian photographer whose practice masterfully fuses cinematic visual language with deeply personal storytelling. His artistic path took a decisive turn during his early twenties when he attended film school in Berlin. After choosing to drop out, he relocated to Athens—a transition that sparked the creation of his debut photographic series, 'Escape from Berlin'. This formative background heavily shapes his image-making, infusing his photographs with the heavy atmosphere, pacing, and tension of film stills.
Operating at the threshold between documentary and fine art photography, Østermann’s work frames image-making as an obsessive, narrative journey. His debut series acts as a visual exploration of grief, self-mythology, and the lingering emotional gravity of leaving a place that still leaves its mark on you. His evocative compositions capture quiet, unstable environments caught between an ending and a beginning, balancing a sense of profound beauty with underlying unrest. In a gallery setting, Østermann’s lens invites the viewer to look past the stillness of the frame to discover a highly charged, poetic dialogue on memory, displacement, and human experience.
