Surface - Current Selected (Selection is ongoing. New artists are being added.)
Artist & Curator
M. Kara is a contemporary visual artist and curator based between New York and Ankara. Her multi-disciplinary practice explores feminine identity, silence, and memory by treating the figure as a canvas to be cut, veiled, and reconstructed.
As a curator for Nxera Art Gallery in Manhattan, Kara views curatorial practice not as the mere decoration of space, but as a vital form of resistance and visual poetry. Her philosophy centers on breaking boundaries between mediums and challenging standard exhibition structures. She actively fosters spaces where hidden psychological landscapes and marginalized narratives are brought into sharp visibility.
This curatorial vision deeply informs her own studio practice. Rooted in the textile traditions of the Black Sea region, Kara manipulates unconventional elements like reclaimed bedsheets, tulle, burlap, and sand. In her ongoing Case Series, she utilizes ceramic busts and mixed-media portraiture to navigate the threshold between concealment and exposure. For Kara, both the curated gallery and the tactile surface function as historical archives, masterfully examining what remains hidden beneath appearances and what ultimately insists on being seen.
